Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining significant momentum from Black women voters, primarily due to her focus on crucial healthcare matters like maternal mortality, reproductive rights, and gun control. This renewed enthusiasm could play a vital role in boosting Democratic turnout in key battleground states ahead of future elections.
Historically, Black women have been among the most reliable voters within the Democratic coalition, consistently supporting former President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, and largely backing President Joe Biden in 2020. However, there were signs that Biden’s support among this demographic was waning before he exited the race. Post his withdrawal, polls indicate a notable shift, with Black voter support for the Democratic ticket rising sharply: 64% supported Biden in July, which surged to 77% in August with Harris leading the ticket.
The turnout of Black voters, especially in rural areas of states like Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, may be pivotal for Harris’s potential victory. Interest among these voters, particularly Black women, has notably increased since Biden left office. “It’s like a renaissance,” remarked Holli Holliday, president of Sisters Lead Sisters Vote, who noted a coordinated effort among various organizations to amplify the voting strength of Black women.
Gun safety has emerged as a pressing concern, especially in Georgia, in light of recent tragic shootings, such as the incident at Apalachee High School, which has intensified fears around violence. In August, support for Harris among Black women surged to 82%, reflecting a 15-point increase from 67% in May. Furthermore, nearly 70% expressed strong enthusiasm to vote, up from 51% in July.
As the election draws nearer, Harris’s emphasis on maternal healthcare resonates deeply with Black women voters. With alarming maternal mortality rates indicating that Black women are three times more likely to face pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts, her advocacy for policies aimed at improving maternal health has garnered substantial backing.
In contrast, Trump has attempted to win over Black women voters; however, after reviewing Republican rhetoric, only 8% feel the party represents their interests. Harris’s stance on gun reform, particularly her support for universal background checks and an assault weapons ban, also enhances her appeal, with 84% of Black women favoring her over Trump’s position.
Indeed, following Biden’s exit from the race, Harris has successfully united a formidable coalition of Black women leaders, with initiatives like the Win With Black Women network fostering significant engagement. This surge of enthusiasm could be crucial in tight electoral races where every vote matters, as evidenced by the seven states that were decided by less than three percentage points in 2020; mobilizing Black women voters could be essential for Democratic wins in the upcoming election cycle.
