A Simple Guide to Calculating Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

The Body Mass Index (BMI) serves as a metric for assessing potential health risks by comparing an individual’s weight to their height. While it provides a basic understanding of weight categories, it does not measure body fat directly or indicate overall health or fitness levels. BMI helps classify individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. This article outlines a simple method for calculating your BMI. (1,2)

Understanding BMI

The BMI formula generally applies to adults; however, it may not be reliable for certain groups, including:

  1. Bodybuilders
  2. Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  3. Seniors
  4. Children
  5. Individuals with physical disabilities

You can calculate your body mass index with the following formula:

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2

(kg: kilograms, m: meters)

The outcome classifies individuals into the following categories:

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25-29.9
  • Obesity: BMI 30 or higher.

Steps to Calculate BMI

1. Measure Your Weight

For an accurate weight measurement in kilograms (1 pound equals about 0.45 kg), weigh yourself in the morning after using the restroom and before eating or drinking. Ensure that the scale is on a flat surface.

2. Measure Your Height

Stand straight with your back against a wall and use a tape measure to determine your height in centimeters (1 inch is approximately 2.54 cm).

3. Calculate Your BMI Using the Formula

Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.

Calculation Example

To calculate the BMI for a man weighing 90 kilograms and standing at 1.79 meters tall:

  1. Calculate the square of the height: (1.79)2 = 3.2041 m2
  2. Divide the weight by the squared height: 90 kg / 3.2041 ≈ 28.12 kg/m2
  3. A BMI of 28.12 indicates that he is classified as overweight.

BMI and Health Risks

Individuals who are overweight or obese, with BMIs exceeding 24.9, have a heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. It is advisable for them to lose weight, increase physical activity, and maintain a healthy diet. Conversely, those who are underweight may also face health challenges and should consult a healthcare provider for advice.
